My Name is a Killing Word
Kudos to those of you who took part in my informal rock star/movie quiz, particularly Miss Cellania, Tan Lucy Pez, G, Poppy Buxom and cj. I'd give the final score, but being a computer programmer, I'm not so good with math. Anyway, good job everybody. So, here is my list of sci-movies that have a rock star playing a villain or the leader of a civilization. Let me know if I've missed any.
Tom Petty - The Postman
Tina Turner - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Sting - Dune, The Bride
Mick Jagger - Freejack (With Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins, of all people)
Gene Simmons - Runaway (With Tom Selleck and Kirstie Alley)
David Bowie was the villain in Labyrinth (fantasy, not sci fi), but was also the lead in The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Sorry, I can't give credit for Grace Jones in A View to a Kill, and certainly not for Wayne Newton in The Living Daylights.
...And sci-fi movies starring members of the cast of the TV show Smith:
Ray Liotta - No Escape, Muppets from Space (!)
Virginia Madsen - Highlander 2 (Giving new meaning to the tagline "There can be only one"), Dune
Simon Baker - Land of the Dead (Sequel to Dawn of the Dead. This is a really good movie, believe it or not, even if you haven't seen the prequels), Red Planet
The title of this blog, btw, is a line from the movie Dune. And may be tied with "Nobody puts baby in the corner" for worst movie line ever.

:) that final quote was FROM Dirty Dancing!!!!
Go me, go me!
...a movie which I can proudly say I've never actually seen.
BTW, I just added a caption to the Sting pic. It seemed like it needed an explanation.
What is up with Batlike panties? Goodness...
Never seen Dirty Dancing? Lord, that is all I watched when I was like... 10. :) Yet I also snuck into Predator at age 10... so there was hope for me.
I like just watching everyone get the answers and then saying "I knew that" Fun game!
Is there another 80's rock star who has a larger range between his highest high and his lowest low than Sting?
Or ANY rock star for that matter.
Or any famous person, now that I have thought some more about it.
citymouse - Ain't it though?
joel - Probably not, although I wouldn't mind looking like that at my lowest low, plastic underwear notwithstanding.
dosbozea: dus-BOZE-ee-ya (n) A feeling of slight nausea brought on by an inhalation of gas fumes and a disturbance of one's equilibrium, generally caused by levelling a dirt pile with a tractor.
cj - If I ever do a quiz about muscle-bound actors turned state governors, Predator will definitely come up.
Joel, as Ozzy Osbourne said on his TV show after detailing the many woes of his life, "It could be worse. I could be Sting."
Best line ever!
fitgwn - what the seamstress does
I almost decided to cheat and go on IMDB and look up the answers. Then I thought twice and realized I really didn't want to put forth the effort.
Gregory...even worse, I DID go to IMDB and couldn't find the answers.
btjli: What Batgirl uses when...oh never mind.
