Blogger Code of Blah Blah Blah

I recently ran across something called a "Blogger Code of Ethics" on the web somewhere. What a great idea! It's about time somebody got us unruly bloggers in line. I agree with this Code 100%. Or maybe 74.3%. Still, I mostly agree with it. I've republished it below with a few comments of my own.
  1. I will tell the truth. Man, wouldn't it be great if all bloggers told the truth? I strive to include some truth in almost every one of my posts. Lies are important too, of course.
  2. I will write deliberately and with accuracy. Or hire a lot of monkeys.

  3. I will acknowledge and correct mistakes promptly. I always do this. I think. I'll have to come back to this one.
  4. I will preserve the original post, using notations to show where I have made changes so as to maintain the integrity of my publishing. This one is crap.
  5. I will never delete a post. Even if the original writer of this post tells me to. I have my principles, after all.
  6. I will not delete comments unless they are spam or off-topic. Somewhere, Joe comment-deleter is squirming.
  7. I will reply to emails and comments when appropriate, and do so promptly. My responses may, however, be highly in appropriate.
  8. I will strive for high quality with every post – including basic spellchecking. I wonder what basic spell-checking is. Does my post qualify as "high-quality" if I only mispell hard-to-spell words?
  9. I will stay on topic. I have no problem with this one. But then, I'm an easy-going sort. I credit my 4th grade teacher for instilling me with those values. Of course, she also made me pay $12 for my share of a window that a classmate of mine broke. She said we weren't allowed to "play tag" behind the school. I wasn't playing tag, ok? And I wasn't the idiot who threw the rock. What was his name again? Damn, I'm blanking.
  10. I will disagree with other opinions respectfully. This one's crap too.
  11. I will link to online references and original source materials directly. That reminds me, I should give some credit to the author of this code of ethics. Just google "Blogger Code of Ethics." You'll find it eventually.
  12. I will disclose conflicts of interest. This one's a must, especially if you expect to get picked up by a popular aggregator site like humor-blogs.com.
  13. I will keep private issues and topics private, since discussing private issues would jeopardize my personal and work relationships. Greg Johnson! That was his name. If you're reading this, Greg, you owe me $12.

Humor-blogs.com abides by a code of ethics so strict that it makes Richard Nixon look like Spiro Agnew.

I cannot possibly respond to every email sent to my blog. I'm not trying to brag or anything, it's just that the nature of my site sort of demands a lot of email....and I get a lot.

Is this Code saying a general "thank you" included in a post isn't enough? That one needs a "This one is crap" also, Diesel.

Oh...if you see Greg he owes me $7.50, too.

Is it just me, or would this force everyone to give up blogging? Poliblogs can't survive with 1-6, 10, and Mommyblogs and teen blogs can't survive with the rest. We're down to weatherblogging.

Oh my gosh. What a great post! I'm laughing out loud -- which is difficult since I lost my voice (and my laugh) from singing to loud and yelling conversations in the piano bar in Vegas the other night. ACK! You crack me up so much (off topic, indeed). And the very IDEA of rules for bloggers makes me want to fly my lovely little finger at anyone who would even ATTEMPT to cage this little blogger in. I'm offended. Can you tell? This is me being offended that someone would try to rule me. ACK. I'm such a rebel. Do people think that rules like this work? Honestly. Anyone who would go, "Okay, cool. Thanks for the rules" isn't someone I want to read anyway. Oh well. Send them a "this is crap" e-mail for me, would ya. I'm not set up yet. Saves me time and trouble. ;o)

#13 just brought it all home so beautifully.

4th grade sounds like a year of ambivalence for you--structure: good; false pay-out: suckage.

Oh My GOD! Are they serious???? This means I have to just stop blogging, because I'm pretty sure I break all in damn near every freakin' post!!!!

CRAPOLA on them but not on your fantabulously funny and slightly on and off topic post! No, no, keep this in a handy reference spot for us all to come scoff at every now and again.

Oh my God! This one brought a tear to my eye ... it's like the Declaration of Principles in Citizen Kane.

I'm not talking about the musical version with Scott Baio. I'm talking about the original with Orson Welles.

I find the whole concept of a Blogger code of ethics repugnant. You know the people that think this is a good idea are people that take blogging - and themselves - way too seriously. You know the ones.

They talk about blogs being the "New Media," and blather on about "Credibility of blogs as a resource." Get a grip! You people remind me of the delusional idiot on the after work basketball team that thinks he's two free throws away from making the starting line-up in the NBA.

Here's my blogger code of ethics. "It's my site. I'll do with it whatever darn well pleases me. If you don't like it then go away. If you make yourself a pest, I will ban you."

Now that's the TRUE Bloggers code.

...don't delete comments? Oh, that's perfect for YOUR blog, reminds me of those labels on mattresses and pillowcasess--they don't pertain to US.

I have one of those stupid blogs where no one checks back for my answer--I just reciprocate the visit. Geeeeez, this isn't prime time, or anything.

Yikes...this means I ought to stop blogging! LOL!

Diesel, you once commented on how hard I am on typos and correcting myself, but even I'm not that anal! This is almost like "The Rules" (that book/list of do's and don'ts for women and dating) LOL!

I'm fine with the code. Except for #1. I am too lazy to fact check, so I make things up. I hope no student ever comes across my blog and cites it as a reference.

No way. They should just set up some "neighborhoods" between referential sites (libraries - snooty-I'm-always-right-sites) and blogger sites which I will call The Playgrounds! What's up with the code? I always tell the truth (to my knowledge), and give credit to everyone -- but no way to the no-deleting. I reserve the right to delete anything on my blog. Anytime.

Oh for the love of God. Now there are RULES? I correct mistakes when I find them, and who gives a shit about preserving the priginal integrity with notations. I respond to comments, because I so appreciate getting comments. So that's not rule-driven for me. High quality? And is there a spell checker in blogger? And who is defining what counts as staying on topic? I will disagree with other points of view in a post in whatver way I please, but I would always disagree respectfully to commenters, who are my blog friends after all. So I say the hell with ethics! Keep bloging as you wish, and I'll keep reading it.

Does this imply that there are blog Police, just as there are Mattress Police? Are they watching us in some Orwellian way? Waiting to kick down our blog doors and take us away?

I think I can prove that that notion is false and here is my evidence:

You are still blogging.

Whew! I feel better now.

Hilarious post.

Nice to be reading your stuff again!

Please report to the blog desk at your local precinct office and use the code word: McCarthy

Your prompt attention to this matter is expected.

Hey blog police, how do I know you are real? Why should I take you seriously? What are my rights here? What is the color of Aspen blossoms in the spring?

This is the blog police. My badge number is 8897-G, and I am authorized by the blog authority to exercise necessary force to get you to comply. I am not familiar with Aspen blossoms but I did got to Aspen once.. on my honeymoon. I don't ski but it was beautiful there. We had a winter wedding, which I don't recommend for travel reasons, but....Aaah, damn you! you just got me fired!

Greg Johnson? You found Greg Johnson?! That sonofabitch owes me one jump into the fire and one jump off a bridge. Yeah, we were in the second grade together down there in Turlock, Crowell Elementary. And the teacher said, "Gawpo, if Greg Johnson jumps into a fire or jumps off a bridge, does that mean that you're going to do that, too?" And that prick Greg told me he'd do it if I did it first.

Six weeks in the Dornbecker's Burn Unit and a Coast Guard search later, I'm still hunting that asshole down!
