6 More Weeks of What?

For Neva and Gawpo. Some pictures of my "backyard" and my beautiful new concrete slab. Click to enlarge.

Don't you wish you lived here? Well too bad, you can't.

A view of the house from the orchard. Facing west.

The slab. Facing southeast.

A view of the orchard from the slab at sunrise. That's the water tower and the Flying J sign in the background.

Basically the same view during the day.

A view of the orchard, facing east/southeast (turned just slightly left from the last two pics). That's water tower #2 in the distance. Ripon loves water towers.

A view of the orchard and water tower #2 from the slab. Facing east.

Same view. Cool rain in the distance.

How'd that one get in there? Get those loafers out of the frame!

I love orchards!! What a gorgeous place you guys have! What is the slab for?

G - Take the subway as far west as it will go. Then rent a car with unlimited mileage.

Furiousball - It's the best time of year out here. Almond blossom time! It only lasts for about 3 weeks, but there's no better place to be for those 3 weeks.

Arlene - The slab is the foundation for the rest of my house. Framing is slated to begin this week....

Wow...orchard sure a wonderous thing. The blossom tells me spring has arrived where you are.

Lovely house, lovely view and the loafers are alright too :)

that's a mighty cute pair of loafers ya got there, Diesel...

here's the difference between YOUR central California, and the one i grew up in: yours is lovely. trust me, south of Fresno is anything but (ugly as one, too) i'm very impressed. is there nothing you can't do, Asparagus Boy? xox

Arlene: that slab is where Diesel performs sacrificial rituals once a month (dirt dinosaurs, funky pillows, lurkers), in hopes of retaining the ability to write well. so far, so good, eh?

oh that's beautiful. makes me think you're closer to my home than you are, cause that could so be a picture of my parents backyard.

What beautiful, beautiful pics, Diesel! I don't know why, but for some reason I anticipated you living in a more urban setting. Dunno why. Your place is stunning and your kiddies are adorable.

Adorable kiddos! Almond blossoms make me sneeze like all the other friggin' stuff that's blooming right now. Bah...

Dang those trees grow fast. I was there when they were planted, I think.

Your kids grow fast, too. They're gonna be like 6'5" aren't they.

That cements it; I'm a voyeur of the highest order.

I could pretty much look at photos of other bloggers' houses and yards all day--especially if they feature orchards and dreamy rain shots.

Does your wife ever command, "Stop calling me The Slab."

Oh that is very pretty.

And get those kids to work! You don't give them a bowl of cereal each morning so they can hang about doing nothing. When they're done there, I have a chimney the could sweep!

Minka - Thanks! It is a great time of year around here.

Robin - Yes. Well, 8 acres of it. There's also orchard all around it which doesn't belong to me. And of course I don't farm any of it, because I'm lazy.

Lime - It's less gorgeous in August when the overgrown weeds have died and turned brown and the trees have lost their blossoms and are weighed down with almonds, but right now it's pretty nice. :)

Neva - Is there anything I can't do? Well, focusing on one thing at a time comes to mind.

Pink Drama - Where are your parents? Do they have almond trees? There aren't many places outside the Central Valley (and I supposed the Middle East) where they grow almonds.

Chrissy - I know, I'm a paradox. I don't seem like a country boy. I'm pretty sure I'm the only guy in town who subscribes to The New Yorker. :)

Claire - But they're so pretty!

Glacial Spain - Isn't it crazy? They're only like 3 years old. The trees, that is. I'm guessing Climber is going to be 6'3". Hopefully Speed Pony won't be quite that tall....

Jocelyn - Every day....

Tanya - Now you're talking!

You know I'm just picturing my kids running through this, in the daydream they are running through the orchard, laugher is light in the air as material is billowing about them (for effect - some organza something or other), they never come close to a fight and whoa, wake up, daydream over. Damn you Diesel, just when I was convinced city living is the way to go!

Oh man. Have you ever gone and made me homesick. That ground behind the Dieselets is absolutely the same turf at what is now just my parents' house down in Turlock. And the doves. I miss the doves darting by. And that sky which we get to see so little of inland here in the coast range of Oregon. It goes on forever. When I was home in January we were blessed with one of those rare days when you could actually see the tops of Yosemite to the east and the wobbly outline of those hills that house the Altamont. Maybe I could move back after all. Even the water tower and the Flying J. How many hundreds of times have I seen THAT sign! And best of all---the amans in bloom. Thank you.
